Description: Detecting Southern Ocean change from repeat hydrography, deep Argo and trace element biogeochemistry (Chief Scientist: Dr Steve Rintoul, CSIRO) The Southern Ocean has a profound influence on regional and global climate, sea level rise, and biological productivity. The project aims to discover how and why the Southern Ocean is changing, and to identify the consequences of those changes for climate, sea level and marine life. The research will help deliver more reliable projections of future climate, from models that more faithfully represent critical Southern Ocean processes; such information is urgently needed to allow Australia to foresee and manage the risks and opportunities associated with climate change. CAPRICORN: clouds, aerosols, precipitation, radiation and atmospheric composition over the Southern Ocean (Lead Principal Investigator: Dr Alain Protat, BOM) Clouds over the Southern Ocean are one of the largest uncertainties in the prediction of the future climate of the Southern Hemisphere. This study will bridge an observational gap in this data-sparse, unique region of the World assisting in understanding why climate models poorly simulate the energy balance over the Southern Ocean and improving skill of weather forecast models to simulate frontal cloud systems. This will be achieved by analysing cloud, aerosol, and precipitation observations of frontal cloud systems and associated processes using dedicated radar, lidar, and radiosounding observations from the RV Investigator and satellite platforms.

Stoppled radar while at achnor in Hobart just after 00 UTC to adjust foam an inspect dishes. Removed big piece of duct tape that had fallen into one of the dishes. Restarted radar at ~01 UTC and ran until 0430 UTC approximately during which time the stabalized platfrom was not running. At 05 UTC Ian resarted the stabalized platform and I restarted the radar. All is running fine now.

    Atmospherics_in2018_v01 Hazy conditions continued through the day. Stratus was in and out as a cirrus layer passed over. Presently at 1900 local, a layer of midlevel clouds are above a thin layer of stratocumulus. The sratocumulus are invisible to the radar but attenuating the lidar fully most of the time. W-Band is just hinting at the mid level clouds. Picture shows the stratocumulus under the mid level overcast looking north at 1900 local. Ship remained on southern edge of the cold air clouds circulating around the low. Straocumulus remained variably broken all day with no evidence of precipitation. Soundings showed strong marine inversion with base of the marine inversion near -8 C. Noted that Soctrates flight sampled northeast of our location today - roughly along a streamline from where we have been located. Cloud instruments running well. 3-hourly soundings continue while we are sampling the cold air portion of the low.

    Atmospherics_in2018_v01 scan pattern changed The manufacturers at Sigma Space (contact: Adam Slagel) notified me that the scanner should be set to an azimuth of 0degrees whilst pointing at zenith (elevation=90degrees). From Adam Slagel: " When you have the scanner pointed vertically (90º), keep the azimuth angle at 0°. In short, there are some positions of the scanner that have slightly different polarization properties, which tend to occur only when the scanner is pointing vertically with a varying azimuth angle. This has to do with the physical properties of the mirror coatings since they cannot match the theoretical design values 100%. They are as close as current techniques and technology will allow, but still not exact. " Therefore whilst the scanner is sitting at zenith (except for the elevation scans from 0-90 and 90-0) I set the azimuth to 0degrees. Scan pattern file: ScanScenario_CAPRICORN_v12.txt

Noticed bright band on high elevation scans of weather radar (donut shape reflectivitiy pattern) even though no rain at the surface - approximately 00 UTC. Utah microwave radiometer showing random occasional noise in the 31 GHz channel. first noticed yesterday. Worse when very cold. Seems to have mitigated some as temperatures warmed today. Issue characterized by sharp drops to low Tb - similar to what was scene at Macquarie Island. LIkely due to salt or other contaminants in the radiometer. Unable to get the radiometer into shelter to do a cleaning at this time. Noise can be reaonably filtered from the data. Other instruments nominal. 6 hourly soundings Aerosol concentration features to high numbers noted late this afternoon.

    Atmospherics_in2018_v01 Warm frontal weather with warm temperatures, fog, rain, and stratiform clouds continued through local afternoon on the 7th. Rain ended by early afternoon with fog continuing. Winds increased from the west northwest during the evening. A quick burst of southwesterlies, lowering surface humidity and temperatures, rising pressure, etc indicated passage of a cold front but surface meteorology quickly shifted back to westerlies with temepratures warming. Presently, we are observing an overcast layer based near 1.5 km. This region of clouds is very notable on satellite imagery as an extended sheet of colder topped mid level clouds that extend to 130 West at this time. Sounding shows that cloud base is near -10 and tops near -15. 3 hourly soundings will continue as long as the mid level clouds persist. Instruments appear to be running well.

    Atmospherics_in2018_v01 Epic day. Transited east toward ocean color hotspot near -56.5, 142.5 while low pressure center moved eastward at slightly more rapid pace. Underway flourescence which had been running about 10x over yesterday's mininum declined suddently to near zero within 1 hour of our intended location. Backtracked into heavy seas and gale force winds. Salinity and dissolved Oxygen tracked in reverse but flourescence did not recover. Stopped near present location to begin sampling for aircraft. GV began series of passes near the ship after 1300 local beginning with a south bound run at 20K ft. Then everntually a series of passes above, in and below clouds include ramps up and down. Excellent day as clouds were supercooled with cumulus rising into sratocu and very strong marin inversion and decoupled boundary layer. All instrumentation on ship worked well. Collected CTD and water samples for analysis. Will remain at this location until midnight then steam north.

    Atmospherics_in2018_v01 Polarisation calibration Performed a test of the instrument under different azimuth angles to assess possible issues with the polarisation properties. To do this, I ran the instrument around all azimuth angles (10 degree increments) pointing vertically (i.e. zenith). Conditions were clear blue sky. So, there should now be data between 2018-02-19 06:42 and 2018-02-19 06:50 UTC that rotates between azimuth -180 to +180 (at +90 elevation) that we can use to assess these polarisation properties in the field. Also note: No data was collected between about 2018-02-19 05:55 and 2018-02-19 06:07 UTC; I wanted to do a calibration but clouds came over so I stopped.
