SO 1/87

T. Davis (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 1/87 was undertaken for a tuna larval and tuna fish survey including oceanographical studies in the east Indian Ocean, mainly within the boundaries of 15 - 17 degrees S and 115 - 117 degrees E. Cruise aims were to determine the distribution of larvae in relation to the thermocline, time of day and moon phase. To investigate the oceanography of the area and to complete a CTD section from Port Hedland to the study area. To investigate the composition and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the area. To collect larvae samples for biological studies and capture mature tuna by line and troll fishing. Deployment of three satellite tracked buoys, two within the study area and one at approximately 18 degrees S, 117 degrees E. To rendezvous with the Japanese Research Vessel "Shoyo Maru" to carry out joint sampling and calibration of Japanese sampling techniques. To carry out experimental light fishing for post-larval and juvenile tunas with a Boukiami dip-net.

Griffiths (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 5/85 was undertaken for a fish and larval survey including biological oceanography in waters off the Tasmanian coast, Bass Strait, Victorian, New South Wales and Queensland coasts. Leg 1 cruise objectives were to conduct deployment trials and testing of CTD. Ichthyoplankton sampling on established transects around Tasmania and routine hydrology and plankton studies on those transects. In addition, two thermosalinograph transects 10 nm either side of and parallel to transect 5 (off Sandy Cape). Additional sampling in the vicinity of Gabo Island and at selected stations on the west coast of Tasmania and in Storm Bay. To examine the surface temperature - salinity structure in the vicinity of Sandy Cape. To sample ripe Blue Grenadier on the west coast for larval rearing studies and demersal fish on the west coast for taxonomic purposes. To sample demersal fish for MSL as part of an ongoing biological programme and to carry out routine seabird observations. Leg 2 cruise objectives were to measure 14 C production by autotrophs in oligotrophic temperate and subtropical waters, and heterotrophic production rates in temperate and subtropical waters. To measure the levels of chlorophyll, POC, DOC, and nutrients and correlate these with the autotrophic and heterotrophic productivity results. To compare particle size distributions of phytoplankton and zooplankton in oligotrophic temperate and subtropical waters. To determine the latitudinal distribution of pontellid copepods and foraminifera along 155 E. To continue routine seabird observations, and to conduct a brief census of seabirds on Cato Island.

Gunn (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 4/85 was undertaken for a demersal fish survey including blue grenadier and ichthyoplankton sampling in Tasmanian, eastern Bass Strait, eastern Great Australian Bight and southern NSW waters. Leg 1 cruise objectives were to test and calibrate the radio direction finder. To sample ichthyoplankton along standard transects around Tasmania. To deploy and track for 48 hours a buoyed drogue (including 24 hour sampling of larvae around the drogue) and to deploy surface drifter cards in the blue grenadier spawning area on the west coast of Tasmania. Also to conduct hydrological sampling in the area. Leg 2 cruise objectives were to carry out ichthyoplankton sampling on the continental shelf break between Eden and the eastern Great Australian Bight. Demersal fish sampling for MSL as part of an ongoing biological programme. Adult blue grenadier sampling from SA trawl grounds. Neuston sampling from Bass Strait and to collect ovarian tissue samples from commercial fishes for analysis by CSIRO Division of Food Research.

T. Kenchington & R. Thresher (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 3/85 was undertaken for a fish survey, ichthyoplankton and hydrological sampling in Tasmanian and eastern Bass Strait waters. Leg 1 cruise objectives were to fish and to calibrate the engel highrise and pelagic nets, to sample bottom fish in the eastern Bass Strait and to carry out seabird observations during the cruise. Leg 2 cruise objectives were to test and calibrate the Radio Direction Finder, sample ichthyoplankton along standard transects around Tasmania, collect oceanic water for phytoplankton culture, carry out hydro-transects and to collect euphausid species for a collaborative study between Division of Fisheries Research and the University of Tasmania.

Leg 1 cruise objectives were to conduct sampling for blue grenadier from off the south, west and north west coasts of Tasmania and from the eastern Bass Strait. To sample ichthyoplankton on the transects around Tasmania and to conduct routine hydrology and phytoplankton studies on those transects. To sample bottom fish in the eastern Bass Strait and to conduct seabird observations during the cruise. Leg 2 cruise objectives were to conduct demersal, pelagic and larval fish sampling in the core study area, 11.7 nm east off Mistaken Cape on the east coast of Tasmania. Also to conduct hydrology transects, zooplankton sampling, collect lanternfish for heavy metal analysis, and to photograph demersal and midwater fish.

Leg 1 cruise objectives were to conduct demersal, pelagic, larval and juvenile fish sampling in the core study area (off Maria Island, east coast of Tasmania) and to carry out assessments of algal and zooplankton biomass and species composition on hydrology transects through the core area. Leg 2 cruise objectives were to sample larval fish on a series of transects around Tasmania. Leg 1 cruise objectives were to conduct sampling in the core study area (waters off Maria Island) for demersal and pelagic fish. To conduct an ichthyoplankton survey and to carry out sampling at hydrological stations including assessments of algal and zooplankton biomass. Leg 2 cruise objectives were to continue the survey of ichthyoplankton along a series of transects around Tasmania. To conduct demersal fish sampling in the eastern Bass Strait. To sample blue grenadier on the west coast of Tasmania and to locate fishing grounds suitable for future studies on blue grenadier depth distribution and morphology. To conduct biological oceanographic and hydrological studies along the ichthyoplankton transects and in the demersal sampling area. In addition, 3 days of chlorophyll monitoring were carried out.

Griffiths (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 2/84 was undertaken to conduct a demersal fish survey in waters off Maria Island, east Tasmania and the waters around Tasmania and in the east Bass Strait. Leg 1 cruise aims were to establish the site of the core study area for detailed investigation of the fish communites over the continental slope (450-650m). To conduct demersal fish and larval fish sampling, pelagic trawling and mesopelagic fish sampling in the core area. Also to conduct biological oceanography and routine hydrology stations (XBTs and Nansen casts), and at larval stations. Leg 2 cruise aims were to conduct sampling of larval fish from around Tasmania, demersal fish in the eastern Bass Strait and blue grenadier from the west coast of Tasmania. M. Dunning (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 1/82 was undertaken for a squid and fish survey including plankton and hydrological sampling in continental slope waters of the Tasman Sea. Sampling was carried out in five areas off the NSW coast and in an area off the northeast coast of Tasmania. Samples were collected from midwater and demersal trawls, and hand jigs. Specimens were identified and measurements made. Squid gonads and stomachs were retained for further analysis. Shark stomach contents were also retained for further analysis. Specimens of many fish species were collected and examined to provide supplementary descriptive information for CSIRO's "Field Guide to Trawl Fishes of Temperate Waters". Hydrological sampling was carried out using XBTs.

Cruise aims were to collect samples from trawls for life history studies, particularly on Scomber australasicus, Sardinops neopilchardus, Trachurus declivis and T. mccullochi. To observe dispersion and diel variation in feeding habits of pelagic fish. To obtain detailed biological and hydrological data from selected sites along the cruise track and also from areas of pelagic fish concentration. Secondary aims were to collect samples of elasmobranchs and squid for life history studies. To make a representative collection of fish species for taxonomic work. To collect samples of T. declivis for electrophoretic analysis. To collect Sillaginodes punctatusa for life history studies (South Australian Fisheries). To collect specimens of each Platycephalid species caught for electrophoretic analysis and maurolicus for parasitological studies (University of Queensland). To collect representatives of Urolophid and Triglid families (Victorian Museum).

Primary objectives were to collect biological information on pelagic fish catches particularly Scomber australasicus, Sardinops neopilchardus, Trachurus declivis and T. mccullochi. To examine dispersion and diel variation in feeding habits and to collect detailed hydrological data from areas of observed pelagic fish concentrations and from selected stations along the survey track. Secondary objectives were to examine the distribution and collect biological information on selected elasmobranchs, and to collect ommastrephid squid for taxonomy and biological studies.

Okera (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 02/81 was undertaken for a second reconnaissance of the fish resources in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Australian Fishing Zone (AFZ) sector of the Arafura Sea, by carrying out an acoustic and trawl survey of midwater and demersal fish. Primary objectives were to examine the composition of catches and undertake biological studies on pelagic and semi-pelagic groups (Carangids, Clupeoids, Leiognathids, Rastrelliger, Scomberomorus and shark species). To estimate catch rates and establish a real extent of unusual concentrations of fish detected. Collect echosounder and sonar records. To estimate population size-age and sex ratios for Lethrinus nematacanthus, Lethrinus lentjan, Lethrinus laticadus and Lethrinus choerorynchus from areas fished and unfished for tiger prawns. Secondary objectives included to continue survey of heraphroditic fish families. Examine in areas the cathes of a prawn net. Examine lutjanid species from the Arafura Sea. To collect surface plankton samples for phyllosoma larvae. Carry out gear trials.

Cruise aims were to examine biological processes across the shelf break (100-800 m depth). To examine the diel vertical distribution and feeding chronology of the dominant demersal and pelagic species. To map thermal structure, hydrology (XBTs, vertical zooplankton nets, nansen casts for batch fluorescence and for temperature, salinity, phosphates, nitrates, and dissolved oxygen), and acoustic scattering characteristics across the shelf break. To compare the relative trawl efficiencies of the RMTS, IYGPT and Engel midwater trawls as a function of fish size using high frequency echosounding and low frequency volume reverberation to standardize catches. To examine some of the biological properties of eddies Leo and Maria.

Primary objectives were to examine hydrological (surface water samples for temperature and salinity were taken every 3 hours while in transit from Fremantle and every 2 hours in the survey area) and biological conditions in the area and to collect material from pelagic fish catches for life history studies. Secondary objectives included a diel feeding study of demersal fish, sampling of apex predators and collection of cephalopods for taxonomy and life history studies. Survey methods included acoustics, midwater and demersal trawls, Nansen casts, XBTs, secchi disk readings, variosens profiles, dropnet casts, bongo and surface net tows, trolling and squid jigging.

G. Maxwell (CSIRO) Soela cruise SO 1/80 traversed the West Australian coast south from Fremantle, the Great Australian Bight, the west, south and east coasts of Tasmania, and the east Australian coast to Sydney. The main objective was a fish survey of the Bight using a variety of fishing methods, concentration on an eastern and a western study area. Oceanographic transects were also undertaken off Capes Naturaliste and Leeuwin using XBT, and temperature sections undertaken off the west and east coasts of Tasmania. Hydrological casts were made in association with the fish survey and at 2-hourly intervals along the cruise track when on passage between study areas.
