Long-term Goals

To develop a capability for optimal ocean data assimilation

R&D Objectives

Develop:

  • a modular ensemble data assimilation system;
  • improved ensemble-based algorithms that are suitable for practical data assimilation;
  • methods for improved estimation of model-errors and observation-errors;
  • methods for the design of optimal observing systems.

Project Highlights

  • Proposal of the Deterministic Ensemble Kalman Filter (DEnKF); a new formulation of the EnKF that boasts the simplicity and versatility of the traditional EnKF and the performance of ensemble square root filters (Sakov and Oke 2006).
  • Development of a modular ensemble-based assimilation system (Oke et al. 2005) that has been applied to a range of ocean models including a global model developed under Bluelink; a seasonal prediction model run by the Bureau of Meteorology, POAMA; and a series of regional models.
