Taxon Notes:

Based on molecular phylogenetics, Craig & Hastings (2007) proposed the use of the genus Hyporthodus for some species previously placed in the genus Epinephelus and Craig et al. (2011) also retained Hyporthodus as a genus distinct from Epinephelus. The Australian Faunal Directory is also following these changes.
