Taxon Notes:

Updated from Hypseleotris sp. 3 (Allen et al 2002) after description. Found patchily throughout the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) as well as eastern coastal streams north of the Mary River to Agnes Waters, with a more northerly disjunct population in Waterpark Creek. Hemiclonal lineages involving this species and both H. bucephala and H. gymnocephala are known from the MDB, Inman River (South Australian Gulf drainage) and east coast drainages. Introduced populations are also present in several coastal catchments in Victoria and South Australia (Thacker et al 2022).
