Taxon Notes:Confirmed from Cocos-Keeling Islands by Allen & Smith Vaniz, 1994 and subsequently Hobbs et al 2014. From AFD, accessed 28 July 2014: 'The species is very similar to Epinephelus macrospilos and records of both species need confirmation. This species was recorded from Scott Reef, Western Australia (Hutchins 2001), but the record needs confirmation and is not listed from Australia by Heemstra & Randall (1999)."
