Taxon Notes: | Nakamura & Motomura (2021) described Epinephelus insularis from the Western Pacific Ocean and Timor Sea and noted the true E. chlorostigma was restricted to the Western Indian Ocean and Red Sea. In Australia, E. insularis is confirmed from Scott Reef, Western Australia and off Myrmidon Reef (18 14’S 147 20’E), Qld in 135m. The Australian Faunal Directory (accessed 30.4.2021) also noted distribution as North West Shelf, WA to Evans Shoal and Blackwood Shoals, Timor Sea, NT; some Australian records not documented and need confirmation. Andrawartha & Tuma (2007) show an image of a fish caught in northern Australia, but location not documented. Most type specimens were collected from fish markets but known depths range is 120-300m. | ||||||||
