Scientific Name Notes:	Pérez Farfante & Kensley (1997) revised the genus Penaeus, splitting it into several genera, the status of which have been subject to considerable controversy since. While some authors regard Melicertus as of subgeneric status only, and some fully synonymise it back with Penaeus, here we retain it as a full genus, which is supported by recent molecular work by Hurzaid et al, 2020 showing it is a monophyletic group separate to Penaeus s.l.
