Native to the northern Pacific, this species has been widely introduced elsewhere for aquaculture, and it has become established in the wild in most of these areas. This code replaces previous (interim) CAAB code 00 653002 (FISHLIST 653002).
Scientific Name Notes:
All Indo-Pacific species previous placed in Crassostrea are now placed in Magallana, and the genus Crassostrea is now considered to be restricted to the Americas. Not all workers agree with this change, eg Bayne et al (2017) J. Shellfish Res. 36(3):545-547, and both names (Magellana gigas and Crassostrea gigas) will be encountered in the literature, but here we follow WoRMS in accepting the genus change.
