Survey InvestigatorDescription
FR 04/89

[details]
R. Nunes Vaz (ADFA & UNSW), including other PI's Cruise FR 04/89 was undertaken (alongside the FRV Ngerin) to investigate the frontal activity at the mouth of Spencer Gulf, and its bearing on the apparent inhibition of fluid exchange across the Gulf entrance during the summer and to evaluate the extent of Bight water intrusion into the Gulf/shelf zone, and its role in the dynamics of the frontal zone. Survey methods included CTD profiles, ADCP and underway instrumentation. FRV Ngerin also conducted CTD profiles and fish larval trawls in and around the front. Numerous water samples were collected and nutrient analysis was conducted on board and chlorophyll analysis to be performed following the cruise. Fish larval distributions will be assessed and reported by the South Australian Department of Fisheries. These data collections will complete the 1989 program of observations in the frontal zone.
FR 02/89

[details]
R. Nunes Vaz (ADFA & UNSW), including other PI's Cruise FR 02/89 was undertaken to study fronts and exchange processes in Spencer Gulf, SA. To evaluate the extent of Bight water intrusion into the Gulf/Shelf zone, and its role in the dynamics of the frontal zone and to study summertime upwelling in south-eastern South Australian waters (Beachport in the north to Portland in the south). The South Australian Department of Fisheries' vessel, FRV Ngerin, joined the Franklin for periods (approx. 10 days) of simultaneous, coordinated activity. Survey methods included CTD profiles, ADCP, NOAA 11 satellite imagery and underway instrumentation. Numerous water, nutrient and chlorophyll samples were collected for analysis on board and for laboratory study. The two current meter moorings previously deployed on cruise FR 01/89 were recovered.
