Taxon Notes:Underkoffler et al 2018 noted that Lampris megalopsis is a cosmopolitan species and has been recorded from the Central-North Pacific west to American Samoa, Australia and Indonesia, South Africa (Indian Ocean), the Gulf of Mexico, and along the Chilean coastline. In Australian waters, it is confirmed from a genetic sample (specimen not retained) collected from east of Elizabeth and Middleton Reef, c. 29 18 S, 160 18 E. It is likely to be more widespread in Australian waters but distributional information is lacking.
