- Described from holotype collected in the Rowley Shoals region of Western Australia. Similar to P. squamipinne Alcock, 1889 which was previously thought to be widely distributed from East Africa to New Caledonia, but now appears to be restricted to the Bay of Bengal (Schwarzhans et al 2025). Littauer (2025) noted the adjectival ending should reflect the neuter gender of Pycnocraspedum, hence the correct spelling of the name is Pycnocraspedum rowleyense.
