Taxon Notes:Gymnothorax melanospilus is a junior synonym of G. isingteena. In CAAB, G. melanospilus was previously redirected to (superceded by) Gymnothorax favagineus (37060016) but both G. isingteena and G. favagineus occur in Australia. An AMS specimen of G. melanospilus cited by Russell et al 1983 (Fishes of the Capricorn Bunker Group) is a misidentification of G. fimbriatus. G. isingteena is confirmed from One Tree Island (Qld, c. 23 30 S), New Year I (NT, 133 01 E), Ashmore Reef and northern WA southwards to Coral Bay (23 08 S), in 1-100 m depth.
