Taxon Notes:

Updated from Gymnothorax kidako after Huang et al 2019 resurrected G. mucifer from the synonymy of G. kidako. Gymnothorax mucifer is confirmed from Taiwan, New Caledonia, Hawaii and Australia. In Australia, it is known from WA (NW Shelf, 19 41 S southwards to off Shark Bay, 25 54 S) and on east coast from Gardiner Banks (Qld, 25 00 S) south to Parsley Bay (north of Sydney, NSW, 33 33 S). The true Gymnothorax kidako is currently only confirmed from Japan and Taiwan.
