Description: Cruise FR 03/93 (also known as PASMADES) was undertaken to identify and measure the flux of detritus exported from Papuan rivers bordering the Gulf of Papua and deposited on the adjacent continental margin, and to develop a carbon budget of the mineralisation and incorporation of the material into the food-chain. Survey methods included CTDs, sediment traps, grabs, box/Kastern coring, beam trawls and underway instrumentation. Biological, sediment and water samples were collected for on board and laboratory analyses. Analysis of the water samples included primary/bacterial production measurements, nutrient chemistry, chlorophyll, suspended sediments, trace metals, and radionuclide. Terrestrial/mangrove organic debris was also collected.
