Description: Cruise FR 03/85 was undertaken for coastal circulation and Great Barrier Reef undercurrent studies and to obtain samples of volcanic rocks from the Tasmantid and Lord Howe Seamount chain (between Gascoyne Seamount and Recorder Guyot) to study the origin and evolution of volcanoes, and the nature of the upper mantle source regions for the magmas. Work completed included dredging on five seamounts; deployment of instruments including five current meter moorings offshore from Townsville and three pressure gauge moorings at the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Sediment, rock, and water samples and ADCP and underway data were collected for on board and laboratory analysis. Related cruise FR 06/85.
