This RV Investigator (RVI) voyage will enable ocean profiling LiDARs developed at Macquarie University to be tested in clear ocean waters. A key challenge limiting the development of ocean profiling LiDARs has been in acquiring in-water data to test the inversion algorithms which extract data from LiDAR signals about how temperature, salinity, absorption, scattering, chlorophyll, bubbles etc vary with depth. We will meet this challenge, as we plan to combine satellite data, measure in-situ water properties, and make LiDAR measurements, all simultaneously during the voyage.
In addition to the above, we will investigate the effect of underwater disturbances on LiDAR returns and in-situ water measurements. We will also investigate, for the first time to our knowledge, whether laser beams, similar to those used in LiDAR, impact the behaviour of marine animals.
Our science team includes instrument scientists from a variety of organisations who will bring unique instruments on board to collect data that supports or complements our primary project goal.
Our voyage track will take us through various regions that are classed as High Priority for Parks Australia, and the RVI will undertake bathymetric surveys as we transit these regions.
