Project details

Title: Pilbara Marine Conservation Partnership
Id: 2417
Acronym: PMCP
Investigator(s): Russ Babcock
CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere - Dutton Park [details]

Description: The Pilbara Marine Conservation Program (PMCP) will enhance the net conservation benefits of the globally-significant coral reef ecosystems of the Pilbara by providing an assessment of the condition and trajectory of key ecological values. The project will also strengthen the understanding of causal linkages between ecological Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the processes that affect them. These assessments will inform and complement existing governance and management arrangements. The PMCP program will provide ongoing advice and assessment for conservation efforts in the region, providing lasting benefits.
Description (full): The PMCP Program concept is based on three core ecological components, namely Coral Reef Health; concentrating mainly on habitat forming primary producers, Fish and Sharks; their community structure, interactions and impacts on lower trophic levels, and Environmental Pressures; physical and anthropogenic factors that influence the condition of reefs and associated biota. The Environmental Pressures Project is composed of three subcomponents: Biodiversity Mapping, Connectivity and Environmental drivers. The Coral Health project is divided into four subcomponents: Coral community dynamics, herbivory and predation, macrophyte interactions and Corals past and future. The Reef and Sharks project is divided into three subcomponents: Fish and shark assemblage dynamics, Habitat dependenceis and Management effectiveness.
