Description: | The purpose of this research is to quantify metabolic consequences of reproduction in zooxanthellate scleractinian corals at Ningaloo Reef and assess their vulnerability to stress during the reproductive period. These particular corals form a symbiosis with a diverse and dynamic population of autotrophic dinoflagellate algae known as zooxanthellae. Literature indicates that metabolic responses of isolated zooxanthellae are significantly different to that of the intact association (Gardella and Edmunds, 1999); however the greater part of research examines the former. This research aims to better understand the metabolic responses of the intact coral-algae association. |
