Title: Trawling, Benthic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Indicators: Towards a Spatial Management System
Id: 2167
Acronym: P - Trawling, Benthic Biodiversity & Ecosystem Indicators
Investigator(s): Rodrigo Bustamante
CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere - Dutton Park [details]

Description: This research project is in the national interest. It will develop ecosystem approaches to understand ecosystem functioning and the productivity of the Northern Prawn Fishery. The approach will also be used to contribute to the develop of a whole-ecosystem management and conservation approach for the NPF. The knowledge will be of direct benefit to managers of the fishery (Australian Fish Management Authority), the National Ocean Office and the Department of Environment and Heritage. The information will also have implications for managers of other input controlled fisheries in Australia.
Years: 2005 to 2008

Survey InvestigatorDescription
SS 03/2005

Dr R. Bustamante Southern Surveyor voyage 3/2005 was conducted in the Gulf of Carpentaria during February and March 2005, to undertake Biogeophysical characterization of northern Australia marine ecosystems: assessing biophysical relations, ecosystem biodiversity, and surrogacy.
There will be 60 sampling stations. Each station will be sampled twice-once in the day and once in the night. The stations will be distributed among trawling intensity strata within two or three key habitat types. At each sampling station we will
(a) sample biota with a prawn sampling net and epibenthic sled,
(b) collect surface sediment box core and grab samples,
(c) collect water samples,
(d) deploy an underwater video camera system,
(e) measure water properties with a CTD/turbidity meter, and
(f) measure water and sediment flux with a current meter instrument frame.
