Id: 1934
Acronym: TPRP
Investigator(s): P.C. Rothlisberg
(Former) CSIRO Division of Fisheries/Fisheries Research - Cleveland [details]

Description: The Tropical Prawn Research Project (TPRP) officially started in June 1974, but it was mid 1975 before research commenced. It consisted of a re-structure of the Northern Prawn Project, and the remnants of the East Coast Prawn Project. Field investigations into prawn ecology and laboratory based research on experimental biology were conducted in the areas of Larval Ecology, Juvenile Ecology, Adult Ecology, Reproductive Biology, Food and Nutrition, Behaviour, Physiology and the Catchability of Banana Prawns. J.A. Redfield (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 09/1978 in Eastern Gulf of Carpentaria.
PERSONNEL : J.A. Redfield. TPRP
PURPOSE : Routine monthly sampling of adult prawns and other animals for distribution , abundance and genetic studies.
COMMENTS:
This was the twelth and final cruise begun in August 1977. Good weather persisted for the duration of the cruise except for the last two sampling days, and a lack of gear failure allowed the cruise to be completed in the minimum time. Four stations were ommited (N105 N109 S126 S123).

T. Wassenberg (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 08/1978 in South-east Gulf of Carpentaria.
PERSONNEL : T. Wassenberg. Adult Ecology Group, TPRP
PURPOSE : Routine monthly sampling of adult prawns and other animals for distribution , abundance and genetic studies.
COMMENTS:
This was t h e eleventh cruise in our current series. Good weather persisted for the duration of the cruise with exceptions for the seventh, eighth , and last two sampling days. Despite a number of gear problems, only two stations were missed (S214, S215).

T. Wassenberg (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 07/1978 in South-east Gulf of Carpentaria.
PERSONNEL : T. Wassenberg. Adult Ecology Group, TPRP - 30 May - 6 June, J. Redfield, 6 June - 16 June
PURPOSE : Routine monthly sampling of adult prawns and other animals for distribution , abundance and genetic studies.
COMMENTS:
This was the tenth cruise in our current series . Good weather prevailed for the first twelve days of the cruise , but persistent 30-40 knot southerly winds blew during the last four days. These persistent winds forced abandonment of thirteen stations in the southern section . In spite of this , 94% of the proposed stations were sampled.

John Salini (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 06/1978 in Eastern Gulf of Carpentaria.
PERSONNEL : John Salini, Adult Ecology Group.
PURPOSE : Routine monthly sampling of adult prawns and other animals for distribution , abundance and genetic studies.
COMMENTS:
This cruise was the ninth of our current series . Good weather was encountered for the first 12 days, but persistent 30 knot southerlies forced a night's stay in Karumba. All 210 scheduled stations were completed in 16 nights of sampling.
JB 5/78

[details]
T. Wassenberg (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 05/1978 in Eastern Gulf of Carpentaria.
PURPOSE : Routine monthly sampling of adult prawns and other animals for distribution , abundance and genetic studies.
Additional Research: The Larval Ecology section was attempting to spawn gravid females and rear young to obtain larval stages of many species of penaeid prawns.
PERSONNEL : Ted Wassenberg Adult Ecology Group, Peter Rothlisberg, Chris Jackson - Larval Ecology Section.
COMMENTS:
Cruise TP.05/78 was the eighth in our current series. Cyclone Ha1 did not interfere with the cruise , and 99% of the proposed stations (208/210) were sampled.

John Salini (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 04/1978 in Eastern Gulf of Carpentaria.
PURPOSE : Routine monthly sampling of adult prawns and other animals for distribution , abundance and genetic studies.
Additional Research: The Larval Ecology section was attempting to spawn gravid females and rear young to obtain larval stages of many species of penaeid prawns. PERSONNEL : John Salini - Adult Ecology Section, Peter Rothlisberg, Chris Jackson - Larval Ecology Section.
COMMENTS:
Cruise TP 04/78 was the seventh in our current series. Cyclone Glen interrupted the cruise after only a few stations had been sampled and three nights were spent at Weipa waiting for better weather. Despite various problems, 88% of the proposed stations (185/210) were completed.
JB 3/78

[details]
T. Wassenberg (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 03/1978 in South-east Gulf of Carpentaria.
PERSONNEL : T. Wassenberg. Adult Ecology Group, TPRP
PURPOSE: Searching for banana prawn schools to study the sex and size composition, movements, and activities of individuals within the school.
COMMENTS:
This was the second school search cruise with similar results to the first. No boils or schools of banana prawns (Penaeus merguiensis) were found. A possible mark recorded off Duck Creek in 6 fathoms proved to be a school of fish.
JB 2/78

[details]
J.A. Redfield (CSIRO) Judy B voyage JB 02/1978 in South-east Gulf of Carpentaria.
PERSONNEL : J.A. Redfield, P.J. Crocos, Tropical Prawn Research Project.
A. Crocos, La Trobe University.
PURPOSE: Routine monthly sampling of prawns and other animals for distribution, abundance, and genetic studies.
COMMENTS:
Cruise TP.02/78 was the sixth routine cruise in our current series. A violent monsoonal depression delayed the start of the cruise for two days and a 2-3m swell, during the first week caused modification or abandonment of some shallow water stations. In spite of this late start and some minor mechanical problems, 95%(200/210) of the proposed stations were sampled.

PERSONNEL : J.A. Redfield, Tropical Prawn Research Project.
PURPOSE: Searching for banana prawn schools to study the sex and size composition, movements, and activities of individuals within the school.
COMMENTS:
This cruise was the first of two voyages to search for banana prawn (Penaeus merguiensis) schools. Searching was concentrated in the Snake Creek-Gilbert River region, Sweers Island to Bountiful Island region, and the far southern Gulf. No schools of banana prawns were found.
