SS 06/97 [details] |
C.R. Pitcher (CSIRO) | Southern Surveyor cruise SS 06/97 was undertaken to study the distribution and abundance of puerulus larvae of the tropical rock lobster Panulirus ornatus in the north-western Coral Sea with respect to oceanographic features, diurnal cycles and lunar phase, by scientists from CSIRO Marine Research and Papua New Guinea Fisheries Department. Lobster larvae and other zooplankton were sampled by plankton trawls and vertical-haul plankton nets, oceanographic features were studied with CTD sampling, and the biology of puerulus larvae was investigated by studying the behaviour of captured specimens. Preserved samples were also taken for study of gut contents and genetic analyses. Experiments by DSTO staff, previously scheduled as cruise SS 05/97, also took place as part of this cruise. |
