SS 01/98 [details] |
J. Young (CSIRO) | Pre-cruise objectives: Southern Surveyor cruise SS 01/98 has the primary objective of studying southern bluefin tuna (SBT) in the Great Australian Bight using acoustic methods, which will be compared with results using aerial surveys, plus carrying out hydrographic transects and sampling of possible SBT prey species (other fish and crustacean species) by net sampling. As secondary objectives, data will be collected for calibration of infra-red thermometers on aerial survey planes, plankton and midwater tows will be undertaken for phyllosoma-stage rock lobster larvae, SBT stomachs from wild-caught SBT will be collected from commercial fishers, and 35mm bottom photography will be carried out for possible correlation with the distribution of SBT. Gear trials with the newly installed ADCP will also be carried out. |
