Scientific Name Notes:This species name was erected in 2005 by Beasley, Robertson & Arnold to cover Australian specimens previously identified as Orcaella brevirostris, the Irrawaddy dolphin, which occurs in Asia. DNA and morphometric evidence now indicates that the Australian form is a distinct species.
