Scientific Name Notes: | Until recently, all Minke whales were treated as a single species, B. acutorostrata, however the southern (Antarctic) form is now treated as a separate species, B. bonaerensis (e.g. Rice, 1998). Both species have been recorded in Australian waters, with B. acutorostrata occurring off the Great Barrier Reef. Recent authorities believe that the latter animals represent a presently undescribed subspecies ("dwarf form") of B. acutorostrata. | ||||||||
