Taxon Notes:

This species was originally described from the Mediterranean, and is also widely recorded from the eastern North Atlantic and North Sea. It is unlikely that material recorded from Australia and New Zealand is the same species, but this must await a detailed molecular study. The other possibility is that it is an accidental introduction into Australian waters. Some records of this species from Australia and New Zealand are mis-identifications of C. micracantha, originally described as a subspecies of C. emaciata.
