- Originally this taxon was described as a subspecies - Actinocythereis scutigera costata, WoRMS recognises this subspecies, and also elevates it to a full species under two different genera - Actinocythereis costata and Ponticocythereis costata - all three names are listed in WoRMS as valid. Pending a detailed review, here we keep it in the genus it was first described in, but as a full species.
