Taxon Notes:	This species has been separated into two subspecies (the western H. scalaris scalaris and the eastern H. s. emmae) by Geiger & Owen (2012), but these two forms intergrade completely across the Great Australian Bight. They are regarded here as a single variable species; genetic work is needed to decide their status.
