Animalia (kingdom) » Mollusca (phylum) » Bivalvia (class) » Veneroida (order) » Dreissenidae (family)
CAAB Code: | 23 378001 |
Scientific Name and Authority: | Mytilopsis sallei (Récluz, 1849) |
Rank: | Species |
|
Taxon Notes: | This species, originally from the Carribean but now found in many other regions including SE Asia, was accidentally introduced into Darwin in 1998/1999 (probably from SE Asia) and was subsequently totally eradicated. While not currently known to be present in Australian waters, this species still poses a threat of reintroduction from SE Asia.
Scientific Name Notes: | There has been much confusion over the identity of Australasian records of this invasive species, and it has been identified as both Mytilopsis sallei and M. adamsi. Recent genetic work has shown that these two "species" are actually ecomorphs of the same highly variable species, so M. adamsi is now a synonym of the older M. sallei.
