Taxon Notes:Originally described from northern Europe, and widely recorded from all northern hemisphere temperate to polar waters. Southern hemisphere records need to be verified. Several former subspecies now have full species status, and records from New Zealand may belong to Amphicteis antarctica (formerly A. gunneri antarctica), a wide-spread Southern Ocean species.
