Taxon Notes:This genus includes the commercially grown species (Limnospira fusiformis & L. maxima) previously placed in Arthrospira (and confused with Arthrospira platensis), which are cultivated worldwide to produce "Spirulina". These were all originally placed in the genus Spirulina, but are now recognised as distinct from (and not closely related to) all Spirulina s.s. species. This code is provided for use when identification of a specimen to this level is sufficient, or when no further detail is available.
