Huon Estuary Model: Fish Farm Load Scenarios

CASE STUDY REPORT

Following the completion of the Huon Estuary Study, CSIRO was commissioned by Huon Aquaculture to use the Huon Estuary model to investigate how environmental impacts depend on the location of fish farm loads (both along the estuary, and vertically within the water column).

A report describing this study and its findings is available to download.

As part of the Huon Estuary Study (HES), CSIRO developed a simple model of transport, nutrient cycling and algal blooms in the Huon Estuary. This model included loads from the catchment, the marine boundary and from salmon farm operations based on tons of feed in calendar year 1997.

The HES Final Report includes a set of model scenarios which examine the effect of increases in salmon farm loads on predicted levels of nutrient and chlorophyll in the Estuary. These scenarios were not designed as realistic management scenarios, and salmon farm loads are simply scaled uniformly by factors of 2, 4 and 10, regardless of location in the estuary.
