Description: Cruise FR 09/91 was undertaken to obtain surface truth data on ocean currents in support of ERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) swaths that cut across boundaries of the East Australian Current (EAC). Survey methods included radiometer measurements, radionsonde launches, ADCP, CTDs, SeaSoar tows, Bunyip, AXBT survey (undertaken by the RAAF), underway instrumentation, and wavebuoy deployment/retrieval. In addition, validation SST and atmospheric profile data for satellite SST were obtained for NOAA 11 and 12, MOS-1 and ERS-1 ATSR passes. Wave spectra were obtained at eight locations, several times simultaneously in different current regimes and under both active SAR passes. Several oceanographic sections on the continental shelf to complement those from TECSAS FR 13/89 were obtained, as were data in the northern section to follow up FR 07/91. Preliminary results indicate that the ATSR is performing to within its specified tolerances and anticipate SST accuracies close to 0.3 degrees C.
