SS 03/96

[details]
J. Young (CSIRO) Southern Surveyor cruise SS 03/96 was carried out in oceanic and shelf waters off south eastern NSW in the area of the local yellowfin tuna longline fishery and the east coast of Tasmania. The aims of the cruise were to map the physical oceanography of the area east of Eden; quantify zooplankton and micronekton biomass; quantify phytoplankton biomass and to characterise the in-situ optical properties, including spectral absorption and upwelling and down-welling spectral irradiance in different water masses and compare these with phytoplankton pigments; characterise the diel variation in fluorescence response of the Wetstar fluorometer; investigate the distribution of ichthyoplankton; tuna tagging (acoustic and archival tags); to collect from the longliners tuna stomachs for later comparison of gut contents with net captures; quantify the biomass, and estimates of the length frequency distribution, of salps and pyrosomas (no salps or pyrosomas present in samples collected); to collect multi-frequency acoustic data at 12, 38 and 120 kHz for species identification and biomass studies; to conduct multi-beam sonar investigations of pelagic fish distribution and school behaviour.
SS 03/94

[details]
J. Young (CSIRO) Southern Surveyor cruise SS 03/94 was the last in a series of cruises to study the physical and biological oceanography of the waters of the southern bluefin tuna longline fishery off eastern Tasmania. Two hydrographic transects were completed off eastern Tasmania; one to the east and one along the shelf between the Hippolyte Rocks and Maria Island. Midwater trawls, zooplankton and surface plankton sampling were carried out and acoustic data were collected continuosly.
SS 04/93

[details]
J. Young (CSIRO) Southern Surveyor cruise SS 04/93. Leg 1 was carried out in oceanic waters off the east coast of Tasmania. Cruise objectives include to study the physical oceanography of the waters in and around the jarosite dumpsite; measure zooplankton biomass and chlorophyll a; determine the day and night vertical distribution and species composition of midwater and zooplankton fauna, and collect demersal and pelagic species identified as key species on the 1992 cruise for heavy metal analysis. Leg 2 was carried out in oceanic and shelf waters off eastern Tasmania in the area of the Japanese longline fishery and the Hippolyte Rocks. Cruise objectives include mapping the physical oceanography of the longline fishery area; study the biological production in these waters in relation to the position of the longline fleet using micronekton and zooplankton trawls; liaise with inshore fishermen and longline observers to collect tuna stomachs to compare gut contents with net captures, and study the physical oceanography and species composition of midwater and zooplankton fauna around the Hippolyte Rocks area. Secondary objective was to begin investigations of the distribution of ichthyoplankton in relation to the major water masses off eastern Tasmania.
SS 02/92

[details]
J. Young (CSIRO) Southern Surveyor cruise SS 02/92 was undertaken to study the physical oceanography of the waters in and around the jarosite dumpsite off the east coast of Tasmania and to collect samples of midwater and benthic fishes to determine the presence, if any, of heavy metal concentration in the food chain of the area. Second part of the cruise studied the physical and biological structure of the waters of the Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) fishing grounds off eastern Tasmania and the Hippolyte Rocks.
