In a review of the genus, Keith & Mennesson (2021) concluded that O. ophicephalus is the correct name for the Pacific Ocean species, distributed from the Ryukyu Islands (Japan), Taiwan, Philippines and Micronesia in the north-west to Indonesia, PNG, Solomons, Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji in the south-east. In Australian waters, O. ophicephalus is confirmed from Barred Creek, north of Broome, WA (17°39'S, 122°11'E) to North Stradbroke Island, QLD (27°29'S) and O. porocephala (coded as 37 429065) is restricted to the Indian Ocean, with the only known Australian location being Cocos-Keeling Islands (AFD draft text January 2022).","habitat":"Freshwater
Estuarine
Coastal (0-40m)
","NameVerifiedSource":". doi:10.26028/cybium/2021-452-002","Parent_Id":37429915,"scientificName":"Ophiocara ophicephalus","kingdom":"Animalia","order":"Perciformes","otherVernacularNames":"spangled gudgeon","Reference":". doi:10.26028/cybium/2021-452-002","vernacularName":"Spangled Gudgeon","ChildCodes":"","RecordCreatedOn":"1997-01-01","scientificNameID_WoRMS":"","family":"Eleotridae","standardName":"Spangled Gudgeon (AS5300)","class":"Actinopterygii","scientificNameID_AFD":"","CAAB_status":"Valid"}
