Endemic to northern Australia (from Dampier, WA to Brisbane, Qld). May occur in adjoining areas of southern New Guinea, but no samples found. Shallow-water estuarine, found in tidal rivers, mangrove creeks and muddy tide-pools, at depths of 0–1 m, with substrate of sandy mud, mud and mangrove roots, logs and leaf litter. Found among a variety of mangroves, and often in marginal habitats such as small drainage creeks running through exposed salt flats.
