Thompson (1997) regarded <i>Moolgarda</i> as a synonym of <i>Liza</i> based on examination of paratypes. Senou (2002) noted that the holotype of the type species of <i>Moolgarda</i> (<i>M. pura</i>) was a specimen of <i>Valamugil seheli</i>, the type species of <i>Valamugil</i>. The holotype probably does not exist, but the original description indicates that Senou (2002) was correct (Kottelat 2013).
