Notes to Users
1. Verified vs. unverified names
Scientific names for OBIS taxa with "Y" in the column for "Verified Name" have been verified against, or sourced from the holdings of the Catalogue of Life. Other names listed are as supplied from our contributing data sources, but have not been independently verified, therefore may possibly be outdated or contain misspellings.
Please also note that common names for species are largely unregulated and are included as a guide only. The same common name may be used for multiple species and may also occur in many variants, not all of which will be listed here.
2. Marine vs. non-marine species
OBIS accesses species lists for groups which have marine representatives, but is only part way through filtering these lists to display just the marine species names. Users should therefore be aware that OBIS lists, particularly for certain groups such as microalgae, may include both marine and non-marine species at this time.
3. List completeness
The completeness of the master lists accessed by OBIS varies according to taxonomic group. For some groups (e.g. marine mammals, fishes) the lists are essentially complete. In other cases, lists are far from complete and depend largely on the coverage of the current Catalogue of Life compilation, which is a work in progress.
