Working with your neighbours: Exploring the Macquarie Ridge
Macquarie Ridge extends from the south-west of New Zealand’s South Island to south of Australia’s Macquarie Island. It is a tall thin ridge with narrow gaps that interacts with and influences the position of the Subtropical, Subantarctic, and Polar fronts. In a joint project between NIWA, CSIRO, and the ACE CRC the first research cruise for nearly 40 years visited the region in March 2007 to deploy a series of 9 moorings across two narrow gaps in the ridge, and undertake a hydrographic survey along the ridge. The moorings were retrieved in April 2008, on a cruise which also investigated the geology and seamount biology along the ridge. This talk will present some of the initial results from the cruises, with a particular focus on the physical oceanography of the region.
