‘Rock-rock who’s there?’ and other environmental microbiology research at CLW Adelaide
The molecular microbiology research group at CSIRO Land and Water, Adelaide, undertakes a wide range of applied and environmental research. Most effort is focused on (1) understanding the links between community assemblage and their habitats, in both terrestrial and aquatic systems, (2) characterising community structure (diversity) - at phylogenetic and functional levels – in response to ecosystem change or contamination, and (3) ecology of ‘biogeochemically significant’ groups of microbes, such as those involved in S-oxidation or N2O emissions. The presentation will give an overview of the range of recent and current projects and then give more detail on the biogeochemistry of a mine tailing hill slope, including an introduction to the ‘PhyloChip’ 16S rRNA microarray.
