Managing Estuaries and Coastlines during Global Climate Change - Comparing UK and Australian challenges

Recent experience in drafting 'Shoreline Management Plans' for the UK is examined in the light of related challenges in Western Australia. The UK coastline is tidally dominated and (by comparison) well described by long-term data sets, plentiful supplies of marine sediments have enabled both coastal and estuarine morphologies to keep pace with sea level rise over the Holocene.

While models for tides, surges and waves can accurately simulate components of GCC (msl rise, increased storminess etc), such simulations are reliant on associated scenarios for accompanying morphological evolution . A key issue is whether available sediment sources will be sufficient to 'keep pace' under accelerating rates of sea level rise. An immediate challenge is to develop monitoring strategies to collect the (long term !) data sets that will be required to provide confidence in future forecasts of the evolving and interlinked coastal dynamics and morphology.

A brief summary will be included of recent UK developments in offshore renewable energy.
