AquaTT - a knowledge management company for sustainable sectors

Objective: Introduce & discuss European best practice in dissemination of information between researchers and industry, and its application in an Australian context.

AquaTT was established by Professor Gavin Burnell of University College Cork (with Dr Richard FitzGerald, NUIGalway) in 1992. It is a not for profit (Charity) company that was originally set up, with EU funds, to support student exchange between tertiary education and industry across the European aquaculture sector. Nowadays training is only one of its many activities that can be included under the general heading of “knowledge management”. Typically their way of operating involves establishing the research and development and training needs of the industry (e.g. aquaculture, fisheries, energy, food, environment, health) followed by assistance in grant capture to address particular industry requirements. This process often involves all or one of the following steps:

1. Secure small grant to facilitate partnership formation and proposal writing

2. Take a role in the project as all, or any one of: project coordinator, project manager, information disseminator, stakeholder meetings/conference organiser

AQUATT also services over 3,000 members with a website, newsletter plus training and employment opportunities. The company operates from a small office in Dublin with 5 permanent staff (1 Manager and 4 Project Officers) and a part time Financial Controller. Professor Burnell acts on the Board of Management as a representative of University College Cork (co-owners of AquaTT with National University of Ireland, Galway). In 2009 the company was successful in 4 EU grant applications that awarded them 1.2 million euros. Since January 2010 they have been awarded 3 more projects worth about 1.5 million.
