Visible-Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (VNIRS): A tool for rapidly assessing seafood quality - Capability Development Program, 2009

Over the last few years, I have been developing my capability in Visible-Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (VNIRS) and applying the technique within selective breeding programs to assess flesh quality of aquaculture produce. While good progress has been made, it was clear (mid-way through 2009) that I still had much to learn in many aspects of VNIRS. Also, an ongoing need for enhanced VNIRS capability was identified for existing and new projects. This led to an application to the “CMAR Capability Development Fund (CDF) – Senior Scientist Development Program” for me to undertake a series of training and networking-related activities focused on VNIRS.

In this seminar, I will report on activities undertaken as part of the CDF Program in November 2009. These included my attendance and paper presentation at “NIR 2009” – an international conference focusing on all aspects of VNIRS, which showcased its many and broad applications. Site visits were undertaken to three institutions to exchange information and learn from experts in applying VNIRS to assess meat quality, i.e. 1) NOFIMA (Norway), 2) the Food Science & Technology Dept., Uni of Nebraska, USA, and 3) the US Dept of Agriculture, Nebraska USA. Also, my program included attendance at two training workshops in VNIRS. Overall, the program gave many benefits, and I believe, has significantly enhanced my capability and professional networks in VNIRS.

I will also discuss our current VNIRS research within CMAR assessing salmon, abalone and oysters, and provide a perspective on how knowledge and new skills obtained as part of my CDF activities will benefit this research. The presentation will also provide a general introduction to VNIRS, and give other examples where VNIRS could be applied to provide analytical solutions.
