Scientific support of marine bioregional planning and management – results from the Marine Biodiversity Hub
The Marine Biodiversity Hub has the twin objectives of describing and predicting marine biodiversity and providing new options for its management. We have updated and tested bioregional information being used in marine reserve design by DEWHA, and developed analyses that are providing a new understanding of how we can describe biodiversity. Nearshore mapping using a multitude of approaches is being used to develop new methods to predict the relationship between physical variables and biodiversity distribution. Taxonomy, genetics, and oceanography are being used to estimate connectivity and provide an understanding of how speciation occurred in the past – and its implications for how species may move under changing climate conditions today. Finally, we have tested new options for managing biodiversity that are already being taken up to support marine bioregional planning. I will provide an overview of these results, discuss some of the lessons learnt, and be looking to the audience for ideas that we could address in the future.
The Marine Biodiversity Hub is a collaboration between the University of Tasmania/TAFI, CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship, Geoscience Australia, the Australian Institute of Marine Science and Museum Victoria. The Marine Biodiversity Hub is funded through the Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities Program (CERF), administered through the Australian Government’s Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. The key aim of CERF is to provide sound advice to inform environmental public policy objectives and to better the management of Australia’s unique environment.
