Extrapolating chronic effects of radionuclides from organisms to populations in aquatic invertebrates
We have developed a model which links life history and physiological traits to population dynamics and simulates potential changes in population growth in relation to radionuclide exposure and feeding conditions. In the recent years, chronic effects at low dose of some environmentally relevant radionuclides, including uranium and americium, have been increasingly well-described in controlled laboratory conditions for the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia. However, their consequences in a broader ecological context remained poorly documented. This is because in natural conditions organisms are constantly subject to variable environmental conditions which modulate their capacity to cope with ionising radiations.
