Biological exploration of the deep Arctic Ocean
In August 2005, a multinational team of polar scientists undertook an exploratory into the deep Arctic Ocean as part of the NOAA ocean exploration program and the international Census of Marine Life. Using a combination of traditional sampling tools, plus ROVs and scuba divers, we assessed the composition of the regions three realms: the sea ice, the water column and the seafloor.
An overview of the expedition, and its major discoveries will be presented, among them examples of the many species encountered for the first time for the Arctic, or completely undescribed species.
