Ocean Acidification Meets Acid Rain . . . . . A Chemical Connection?

Acidification of surface ocean waters by anthropogenic CO2 is easily understood as arising from the input of additional weak acidity to the ocean in the form of carbonic acid. Perturbation of the marine carbonate equilibrium is an inevitable consequence of adding acidity. End of story? Maybe not! What if there are other oceanic acid-base equilibria of environmental significance that might also be affected. And what does anthropogenic CO2 do to marine atmospheric chemistry? Perhaps an analysis of the coupled system will yield some surprises . . .
