Life history determination and fisheries management of striped marlin, Tetrapturus audax, in the southwest Pacific Ocean
Striped marlin, Tetrapturus audax, are a valuable species in commercial and recreational fisheries throughout the southwest Pacific Ocean. New Zealand prohibits commercial harvest of this species but approximately 2000MT are harvested per year in the remaining southwest Pacific Ocean. The sustainability of current fishing practices remains uncertain due questionable commercial catch data and inadequate biological information.
A series of ongoing studies in the southwest Pacific Ocean are attempting to better describe the life history of this species and are being applied to determine management measures for sustainable fisheries. Investigations include satellite tagging, mitochondrial DNA analysis, trophic structure analysis, and research on age, growth, and reproductive dynamics. This presentation will review findings from these studies and will focus on research attempting to determine the age, growth and reproductive dynamics of striped marlin in the southwest Pacific Ocean.
