From swallow floats to Argo - and beyond

Neutrally buoyant floats have played an important role in shaping our understanding of the oceans' dynamics. The seminar will trace the technological development of floats from the 1950s to the present day and will highlight the scientific contributions that have stemmed from their use.

Today the floats of the Argo array fill the worlds oceans and have the potential to make fundamental changes to our ability to monitor and understand the oceans and their role in climate.
