Counting all the fish in the sea: the progress of the Census
of Marine Life program
Initiated in 2000, the Census of Marine Life is a cooperative
international program to assess and explain the diversity, distribution,
and abundance of marine life. The Program aims to produce the First Census
of Marine Life in 2010, spanning microbes to mammals, Arctic to Antarctic,
abyss to surface, and near shore to mid-ocean. More than 1000 scientists
from 70 countries are conducting the program, and Australian researchers
are making many key contributions.
Jesse Ausubel, who helped initiate the Census, will report
on its global progress, with an emphasis on new technologies that are
actually working.
